Research has confirmed urease inhibitors can play a vital role in meeting the targets of the European Farm to Fork strategy. A significant reduction of ammonia and CO2 equivalents emissions as well as the improvement of nitrogen use efficiency suggest a broader adoption of urease inhibitors to lower external costs and to improve the return of investment of urea use. Countries like Germany and Denmark have made the use of urease inhibitors mandatory and other EU member states are considering similar proposals; however some questions have been raised regarding the tradeoffs associated with increased inhibitor use. Based on NBPT ecotoxity data it will be demonstrated that a more widespread use of urease inhibitors can be a major positive environmental contributor while creating very few hazards to the environment and consumers. Occupational exposure and the fate of NBPT after application of NBPT inhibited urea will be discussed to illustrate the positive environmental impact and safe use by professional users.

Controlled Release Fertilizers (CRF) are more and more used in field grown applications for specialty agriculture and forestry crops. These coated fertilizers offer a predictable and consistent release of nutrients over a specific time period. Since the amount of nutrients released daily is controlled and in line with plant uptake requirements, CRFs are an ideal tool to reduce nutrient losses and optimize the Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE).

Application of CRF in the planting hole of perennial crops (e.g. fruit trees and forestry seedlings) provides a cost effective single treatment resulting in, quicker development and growth, and, therefore, shortening the time to maturity. Under these conditions, CRF does not cause increased salinity in the planting hole and provides nutrient release over many months (typically 6 months or more of effective nutrient release).

To further improve root establishment and seedling growth, ICL developed a unique combination of CRFs with specific embedded growth enhancers (ICL’s V-Factor technology). In various controlled experiments, we found that the addition of the embedded growth enhancer significantly improved growth in Eucalyptus, Picea and vine grape plants up to 20%.

ICL developed this new product using both technologies of CRF and growth enhancers under the brand name Agroblen (+ V-Factor Technology).

Agriculture contributes to 9.9% of greenhouse gas emissions. The soil releases nitrous oxide after mineral and organic fertilizer are applied. Nitrous oxide is a very potent climate gas that is formed by soil bacteria that are involved in the nitrification process of N fertilizers.
